WHERE I COME FROM
Jeff graduated from Penn High School in Mishawaka, Indiana in 1990. He came to Bloomington that same year and graduated from Indiana University in 1994 with a B.A. in History and Economics and a certificate in Business Management from the Liberal Arts and Management Program (L.A.M.P.) through the Honors College. Jeff is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.
Jeff knew that he wanted to pursue a career in public service and entered the Indiana University-Bloomington School of Law with the intention of becoming a prosecutor. He received his Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from there in 1997. He was admitted to the practice of law in Indiana that same year.
While in law school, Jeff worked during the summer as an intern for the Office of the Indiana Attorney General in their criminal appeals division, where he wrote appellate briefs for the State of Indiana. Later, he did a summer internship with the Honorable Kennard Foster, the Magistrate of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana.
In 1996, Jeff contacted the Monroe County Prosecutor's Office and offered to volunteer as an unpaid law clerk. When a deputy prosecutor left the office soon thereafter, he was offered a job as a deputy prosecutor, practicing under a certified intern rule. This entailed him handling 3 courts of misdemeanors under the supervision of a licensed attorney (until he was sworn in in November, 1997).
In January, 1998, after Jeff had been a licensed attorney for 1 month, he was offered the opportunity to prosecute felonies. Years later, he was promoted to Senior Trial Attorney, and then to First Deputy Prosecutor, a position he has held for several years now.
As First Deputy Prosecutor, Jeff is responsible for charging in the office, trying the most serious cases, supervising 15 other deputy prosecuting attorneys, serving as a trainer for police officers and other prosecutors, and as a 24 hour/day, 7 days/week contact for law enforcement and judges.
During Jeff's tenure as a prosecutor, he has tried over 50 felony jury trials. This has included several murders, attempted murder, rape, robbery, aggravated battery and burglary. He continues to handle many of the most serious cases that have been filed in Monroe County.
Jeff lives in Bloomington with his wife Kim and their two young children. Kim (Wisley) was born and raised here, graduating from Bloomington South High School in 1992. She has taught at Highland Park Elementary for the last 23 years.
